NGCOA MA Mourns the Loss of Frank Edward Herrelko Jr.

Frank Edward Herrelko Jr.

APRIL 11, 1944 – FEBRUARY 26, 2024

IN THE CARE OF

Woody Funeral Home Huguenot Chapel

Frank Edward Herrelko Jr. passed away on Monday, February 26th, 2024, pursuant to a serious fall ten days earlier.

Frank spent his childhood with younger siblings, David, Kathleen, and Jeffrey, moving around the world with their dad in the Air Force. He attended St. Vincent Pallotti High School, Laurel, Maryland and the University of Maryland.

At age 14 already an Eagle scout, Frank quickly realized his calling as a golf professional: after his first day on the course at Fort Meade, MD he came home and announced, “I know what I want to do for the rest of my life.” And that’s what he did.

Frank met his wife, Ann Murdoch, while she was working at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center.

His professional career began with teaching lessons at the University of Maryland, then Assistant Professional at Fort Meade and then Bonnie View. In 1972 he became the Head PGA Professional at Salisbury Country Club, remaining until his retirement.

The MAPGA elected Frank into their Hall of Fame for his career-long dedication and service to the Middle Atlantic PGA, The PGA of America and golf in the Commonwealth of Virginia. He was President of the Southern Chapter and Co-Chaired the Tournament Committee. He was the Section’s Parliamentarian for over 30 years.

Frank was Co-Chair of the State Open of Virginia Committee for a dozen years, and chaired the Virginia PGA Open Championship Committee. He was a founding donor of the Virginia State Golf Association’s Independence Golf Club and received the VSGA’s President’s Award for thirty-five years of exceptional and noteworthy service. He helped bring the Senior Open of Virginia into existence and inducted into the Dewar’s Hall of Fame for Virginia Golf Professionals.

The MAPGA honored Frank with the 1986 Professional of the Year Award, the highest award presented by the association to an active PGA Professional, the Horton Smith Award, and the President’s Award for outstanding, dedicated and selfless service. His service to The PGA of America included the Junior Golf Committee, and the Boundaries and Education Committee. Frank taught for the PGA Business School I and II. He and Ken Lindsay authored "A Summary of the Rules of Golf, " a PGA publication.

As a teacher, Frank taught more than 10,000 lessons. Several of his junior golfers went on to receive golf scholarships and became golf professionals.

Frank loved his community, his friends, golf and his family with all his heart. Truly a guy that would do anything for anyone.

He is preceded in death by his parents, father Col. Frank E. Herrelko, Sr., USAF (Ret.) and mother, Edith B. Herrelko, and is survived by his loving wife Ann; siblings, David, (Frank’s kidney donor) (Janet), Kathleen Easton (Tom) and Jeffrey; and many nieces/nephews & great nieces/nephews.

No formal services are planned.

Contributions in memory of Frank can be made to the PGA REACH Middle Atlantic (a program for junior golf and helping veterans), two primary programs of PGA REACH.
