Bayville Golf Club

Virginia Beach, VA

Private Club Leader

Bayville Golf Club

NGCOA MA Private Club Leader recognizing a private club in the Mid-Atlantic for outstanding business success over the past year.

Bayville Golf Club, Virginia Beach, VA - Bayville Golf Club is a premier private facility, which recently re-opened after complete renovation by Andrew Green. It has been nominated for “Best Renovation” in America by Golf Digest. Club President Stephen Whitfield and the Board of Directors initiated the project after substantial preparation.

Bayville Golf Club has been recognized as one of the best golf courses in Virginia. It has hosted a number of prestigious tournaments, including the Women’s USGA Mid-Amateur Championship, the Virginia Amateur Championship, and the Virginia Mid-Amateur Championship.

In recent years, Bayville Golf Club has undergone a number of improvements, led by Architect Andrew Green and Superintendent Scott Mauldin, CGCS. These improvements include:

New 419 Bermuda grass was installed. Several putting greens were relocated while all of the green’s complexes were completely reshaped to offer variety and challenge. Several new tee boxes were added to offer a variety of yardages for players of all ability levels.  A new irrigation system was installed in 2023, which will improve the overall health and condition of the course. The new system is also more efficient and environmentally friendly. Drainage improvements have been made throughout the course, which will help to reduce flooding and improve playability.

Andrew Green and Scott Mauldin also made a number of changes to the club's agronomy practices. These changes have resulted in healthier and more sustainable turfgrass, as well as a reduction in the use of pesticides and fertilizers. Bayville Golf Club has continued to be recognized as one of the best golf courses in Virginia. The club has also made a significant commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship.

Recent accomplishments include top rankings in Golf Digest and Golfweek, hosting the Virginia State Amateur, Mid-Amateur, and earning Gold Audubon Sanctuary status. The clubhouse was also renovated.

Baltimore County Golf

(BGC)

Public Golf Leader

Baltimore County Golf

NGCOA MA Public Golf Leader recognizing a public club in the Mid-Atlantic for outstanding business success over the past year.

Baltimore County Golf – Baltimore County Golf (BCG) represents a group of five premier public golf courses as well as past GRAA Top 50 US Public Driving Range in the Baltimore County region. Their facilities are Greystone, Fox Hollow, Diamond Ridge, The Woodlands, and Rocky Point, each with distinct layouts that cater to golfers of all skill levels. Over the years, BCG has been committed to promoting golf as an accessible sport for the community, and they have implemented programs and events that bolster both youth and adult participation.

Recently, Baltimore County Golf has achieved several noteworthy accomplishments. They've been at the forefront of environmental sustainability, with initiatives aimed at water conservation, wildlife habitat protection, and efficient maintenance practices.

In addition, their focus on youth development has been commendable. BCG's junior golf programs and camps have seen increased participation rates, giving younger players opportunities to hone their skills and develop a lifelong love for the game. These programs have produced emerging talents that have represented the county in regional and national competitions.

Aside from their dedication to the Folds of Honor Foundation and their commitment to the Special Olympics of America, BCG donates hundreds of tee times, complimentary range balls and three (3) end of year tournaments for the Baltimore County Public Schools Golf Program.

Queenstown Harbor

Queenstown, MD

Sustainability Leader

Queenstown Harbor

NGCOA MA Sustainability Award recognizing a club for innovation and leadership to incorporate sustainability and environmental stewardship into operating practices.

Queenstown Harbor, Queenstown, MD – A certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary since 2008, Queenstown Harbor has 37 holes of championship golf that line the shores of the Chesapeake Bay on the Easter Shore. The turf experts at the courses employ best management practices and Integrated Pest Management to minimize inputs at their site. Wildlife habitat creation, water conservation and reduced pesticide usage are also vital to be good stewards of the land. Since its original design and construction, Queenstown Harbor captures a majority of the rainfall it receives and stores it in ponds for irrigation, conserving water and reducing runoff.

Keeping nitrogen out of streams and rivers is key to protecting the Chesapeake Bay, and this careful management approach has lowered the nitrates and nitrogen in the groundwater compared to the farm that preceded the golf course. In addition, Queenstown Harbor has a wide variety of native grasses and landscaping that grow around Queenstown Harbor. Along the shorelines you’ll find wetlands with a variety of Chesapeake Bay vegetation. The inland freshwater lakes offer buffer strips designed to reduce internal runoff.

The course has a number of sustainability efforts in place, including:

  • Water conservation: The course uses a variety of water conservation measures including switching to more drought-tolerant turfgrass.
  • Wildlife habitat: The course provides habitat for a variety of wildlife, including deer, fox, wild turkeys, birds, bees, and butterflies.
  • Efficient Energy: The course uses recycled materials whenever possible, and it has implemented a number of energy-efficient measures including solar power to assist with electric golf cart charging.
  • Decreased Pesticide Use: The overall pesticide use has decreased greatly with the switch to more tolerant turfgrass types demanding significantly less input.

In addition to the above, Queenstown Harbor Golf Course has also won the National Public Course "Environmental Leader in Golf Award" from Golf Digest and the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America. This award recognizes the course's outstanding environmental record and its commitment to sustainable practices.
