Richmond fire marshals are investigating the cause of a late morning fire at the Westhampton Clubhouse at the Country Club of Virginia that took crews about 50 minutes to mark under control. Only one minor injury to a firefighter was reported.
City firefighters were called at 10:44 a.m. Friday morning for a report of a structure fire at the Country Club of Virginia, said Interim Deputy Operations Chief Brian Turnage.
When the first units arrived four minutes later, they found flames coming from a portion of the roof of the Westhampton Clubhouse, Turnage said.
"While they started working on extinguishing that fire, additional units came in, went inside, and found the fire was inside as well," Turnage said. "So we started operating on extinguishing that."
A second alarm was sounded at 11:13 a.m., primarily to get additional personnel on the scene to relieve crews due to the heat, "and do a lot of what we call overhaul work - having to cut and make holes trying to find fire," Turnage said.
The blaze was marked under control at 11:34 a.m., the chief said.
One firefighter was treated at the scene for a minor injury and then returned to duty. No civilians were injured, Turnage said.
Crews will be on site for several hours for cleanup and to ensure the fire is completely extinguished.
The cause remains under investigation.
"It's way too early to make any determination on cause," the chief said. "Our investigative unit is here on the scene and they’ll probably be here well after our operation units leave."
