Team Representing Washington, DC in USGA Men's State Team Championship Announced
ARNOLD, MARYLAND – Three players from the District of Columbia have been selected to represent the Nation's Capital in the 11th USGA Men's State Team Championship. This year the championship is being conducted at the Country Club of Birmingham's West Course in Birmingham, Alabama September 28-30.
The USGA Men’s State Team Championship, as well as the Women’s State Team Championship, grew out of the Association’s Centennial celebration in 1995. It was believed that a new championship, one in which each state could be represented by non-college, amateur golfers, was a good way to cap the USGA’s year-long birthday celebration.
Each state was invited to send three players; 46 states and Puerto Rico responded and sent teams to compete at Lake Nona Golf Club in Orlando, Fla., in 1995, and 50 states and Puerto Rico sent teams to compete at Sun Ridge Canyon Golf Club in Fountain Hills, Ariz., in 1997. Since 2001, 52 teams — all fifty states, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia — have participated.
The DC Team is comprised of Ryan Tendall (Congressional CC), Endel Liias (CC At Woodmore), and Thomas Wharton (TPC Potomac). Ryan Tendall has been designated the Team Captain. Eric Hulvey (University of Maryland GC) is the alternate.
Ryan Tendall, a University of Illinois graduate, played golf for the Fighting Illini. Twice he earned Academic All-Big Ten Honors, in 2002 and 2003. He played in the 2005 U. S Amateur. He has is also a multiple club champion at Congressional CC. From a golfing family, his father, Skip, has had an excellent amateur career. His younger brother, Connor, is a graduate of the University of Maryland and has embarked on a professional golf career. Ryan and his brother have won numerous Father-Son Championships with Skip. Ryan continues to be a steady performer in local and regional competitions.
Endel Liias was a member of the 2014 DC State Team. A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, Endel played on the Penn golf team earning All Ivy League honors twice. He has competed in the 2001 U. S. Publinks Championship and the U. S. Mid Amateur Championship in 2009 and 2015.
Tom Wharton may be the rookie of the team in terms of USGA Championship experience, but he has earned his place on the team via solid performances in local and regional competitions this past season. He finished 2nd at the WMGA Mid Am Championship and third in the MSGA Mid Am.
Zeric Hulvey, University of Maryland Golf Club, is the alternate for the team. Zeric finished 5th at the WMGA Mid-Am Championship and is a steady performer in events throughout the region.
The Middle Atlantic Golf Association has sponsored the DC Team since the USGA State Team Championship began, and is very proud of the 2016 Team.
