Dear MAPGA Friends:
The Middle Atlantic PGA and the golf world is saddened today by the passing of the man known as “Pro” – Mr. Delbert “Del” Snyder, PGA of the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club in Colonial Williamsburg. Funeral and viewing arrangements are still being made and once that information becomes available, the MAPGA will send an immediate email message. Please read the following brief bio on Del Snyder and enjoy the video vignettes featuring Del.
The Gentleman Pro
Del Snyder was one of the most respected PGA teaching professionals in the region. He learned his craft from the legendary Sam Snead at the Greenbrier Hotel in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. A native of Hot Springs, Virginia, Del began playing golf while caddying at the Homestead at the age of eight. After returning from a job in Iceland in 1958, Sam’s wife encouraged him to work for Sam at the Greenbrier. Del spent more than two decades working as Snead’s assistant, learning and honing his playing and teaching skills, before accepting the head golf professional position at the Golden Horseshoe in Williamsburg, Virginia in 1976. Del contributed heavily to the world-class image surrounding Colonial Williamsburg’s golf resort. His list of students included Presidents, Vice-Presidents, Ambassadors, CEO’s, PGA Tour players, fellow golf professionals and everyday players.
An accomplished player, Del was ranked among the best players to ever be a member of the MAPGA. He won numerous events, including the Section Championship in 1984 (at the age of 50, the oldest member in the section to capture the championship title). Del brought his same level of skill as a player to the lesson tee as a teacher. His method of teaching was a simplistic approach based on sound fundamentals, using common everyday English to be sure nothing was misunderstood. Del’s energy, enthusiasm and level of commitment to teaching the game will not be surpassed. He has truly “made a difference” to the game of golf, and there are literally countless golfers around the world who are either playing the game or are better at the game thanks to Del.
