Last Update :6/7/2012 Golf Industry Leaders Tee It Forward
Stafford, VA – Five top leaders in the golf industry visited Augustine Golf Club in Stafford, Virginia today
to promote the Play Golf America initiative, Tee It Forward which encourages all golfers to play from a
set of tees closer to the hole than the tees they would normally play. Two of these individuals reside
within the Middle Atlantic region - U.S. Golf Association (USGA) President Glen Nager (Washington DC)
and PGA of America (PGA) President Allen Wronowski, PGA (Phoenix, MD). The other three players
were Skip Avery, President of the Club Managers Association of America (CMAA), Bob Randquist,
Past President of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) and Linda Rogers,
President of the National Golf Course Owners Association of America (NGCOA). All five played their 18-
hole round from yardages that were at least 1,000 yards shorter than what they would traditionally play.
When asked about the importance of teeing it forward, USGA President Glen Nager stated that “most
amateur golfers are already playing from yardages that are longer than Tour Professionals” when
comparing their actual ability to the length of the course. “Most Tour Professionals are hitting their 7 or
8 iron into the greens on Par 4’s where your average amateur is hitting a 5 iron or even a hybrid,” said
Nager.
“From the PGA Professional’s perspective, Tee It Forward creates a more enjoyable experience for
golfers because they’re shooting lower scores on average,” states PGA President Allen Wronowski. “At
Hillendale Country Club,” where Wronowski is the PGA Director of Golf “we greet players at the first tee
and recommend a set of tees from which to play based on their playing ability.”
About Tee It Forward
Tee It Forward is a nation-wide initiative of the golf industry promoted through play golf america which
encourages golfers to play from a set of tees that is shorter from what they would normally play. Many
statistics have shown that most amateurs are regularly hitting approach shots on a par-4 hole from 185
to 205 yards. The fact is, most bogey golfers generally only hit approach shots with any accuracy from
within 170 yards. When you TEE IT FORWARD, you have the potential to hit approach shots from 145 to
165 yards. In a 2011 study, 70% of people who teed it forward had more fun playing golf and 52% of
them were likely to play golf more often.
